A Segamat coffee shop has issued an official clarification after a viral social media post falsely accused it of serving pork noodles to Muslim customers.
Nan Yang Coffee Shop stressed that it does not sell pork or use pork fat in its food preparation.
Apology Issued After Viral Pork Noodle Claim
The confusion stemmed from the menu item “Mee Pok,” which the shop explained refers to a flat noodle in the Teochew dialect, not pork. “Mee Pok is NOT equivalent to pork,” the owners emphasized, urging the public not to misinterpret the name.
The shop also clarified that it has never claimed to hold Malaysian halal certification, though it respects all races and religions and welcomes inquiries about its menu.
The founders said the individual behind the viral post had never visited the outlet and accused him of making defamatory claims for attention. A police report was lodged, and the individual later issued an apology.
Nan Yang Coffee Shop highlighted that it has served a diverse community for years, with Malay customers making up 30–40% of its clientele.
However, misinformation caused a noticeable drop in Malay patrons over the past two days. Some regulars have since suggested the shop formally apply for halal certification to restore confidence.
