Former Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli says political “damage” has already taken root because Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim did not act against UMNO Youth Chief Dr Akmal Saleh, whose controversies over the past two years have unsettled Chinese voters.
Rafizi says Damage is Done
Rafizi pointed to incidents such as the socks issue, upside‑down flags and racially charged remarks, arguing that the government’s silence created the perception that political stability mattered more than defending its supporters.
He also claimed UMNO intentionally allowed Akmal to “run wild” to appeal to its grassroots. Rafizi warned that even with policy fixes, rebuilding trust among Chinese voters will be difficult.
