Rare baby spider monkey is now shown to Chester Zoo visitors

A delightful sight greeted visitors at Chester Zoo as they spotted Olive, a female Colombian black-headed spider monkey born on December 1, 2023, to mother Kiara. Mark Brayshaw, head of mammals, expressed joy at witnessing Kiara’s attentive care for her baby. Olive will cling to her mother’s belly for a few months before embarking on independent exploration.

Sadly, the species faces vulnerability, with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature highlighting the risk of extinction. Chester Zoo, alongside European counterparts, strives to boost numbers through conservation breeding programs, contributing to global efforts to ensure the survival of these endangered primates.
