ALOR SETAR, Aug 27, 2026 – Kedah Menteri Besar Sanusi Md Nor has issued a fiery warning to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, saying the people of Kedah will condemn him if gambling activities are allowed to resume in the state.
Sanusi reminded that the Kedah government had already enforced a blanket ban on gambling and lottery premises in 2023, but the Federal Court overturned the decision on August 12. He declared that the responsibility now lies with Anwar, who also serves as finance minister. “If you approve it, you are cursed by the people of Kedah. They will call you pelaq,” Sanusi said in Kedah dialect during a speech in Alor Setar.

The event, organized by the Kedah government’s information unit, aimed to explain the situation following the court ruling. Sanusi further urged Kedah residents to pray for divine punishment against those allegedly behind the legal challenge, claiming he knows the identity of the financier but will reveal it later.
He linked gambling to colonial-era practices, saying it was introduced by the British alongside opium, benefiting wealthy Chinese businessmen while harming ordinary Malaysians. Sanusi insisted the ban was a moral duty, framing gambling as a destructive legacy that must be resisted.
