New: Singapore Fugitive Kidnapped in Johor After Fleeing Across Border

A Singaporean fugitive who illegally entered Johor seeking refuge ended up being kidnapped and assaulted, with his family later threatened with an S$80,000 ransom. Police said the man entered Malaysia at the end of May and was later joined by his girlfriend, who also entered illegally and was also kidnapped.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said that the 32-year-old man and a 33-year-old Singaporean woman were rescued by the Royal Malaysia Police on Tuesday, after an alleged kidnapping. They are wanted by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) for a suspected drug-related offence.

The kidnappers allegedly seized S$12,000 and RM41,400 from the victim before demanding S$80,000 from his mother. After negotiations, the ransom was reduced to S$25,000, with S$5,000 paid online. Police then arrested a suspect during a planned cash handover at a supermarket in Nusa Bestari, Iskandar Puteri, and rescued both victims.

Five more suspects were subsequently arrested. Police said five of the six suspects had previous criminal or drug records, while four tested positive for methamphetamine. The case is being investigated under the Kidnapping Act 1961, while the victims were also arrested for illegally entering Malaysia.
