The Malaysian government plans to retarget RON95 fuel subsidies by mid-2025, focusing on household characteristics and cost-of-living data. Eligibility will consider factors like household size, employment status, car ownership, and the number of school-going children, as well as indicators such as the Cost of Living Index and Basic Expenses for Decent Living (PAKW), recently introduced by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). The move aims to exclude the “T15” ultra-rich from subsidies, ensuring aid benefits those truly in need. Deputy Minister Fuziah Salleh emphasized the comprehensive approach, integrating demographic and economic factors, as outlined during discussions in Parliament.
