SpaceX is moving aggressively to secure energy for its expanding AI infrastructure by building a factory to produce gas turbine blades and vanes in‑house.
Elon Musk announced that the company will manufacture its own parts, arguing that solar power alone cannot meet the surging electricity demand from AI data centers.
Musk explained that by casting turbine components internally, SpaceX could accelerate natural gas turbines coming online by up to 18 months — a move he described as a “game‑changer.”
SpaceX Colossus Data Centers Already Using Mobile Turbines
The decision comes amid a global scramble for energy supplies as tech giants race to power massive data centers.
Companies like OpenAI, Amazon, and Microsoft have turned to natural gas plants, while Meta’s Hyperion project in Louisiana will require 10 new facilities. Shortages of turbines have even pushed aerospace startups to repurpose jet engines for power generation.
SpaceX has already deployed mobile gas turbines at its Colossus data centers in Mississippi and Tennessee, drawing local complaints over noise and pollution.
Still, Musk insists natural gas is essential to “bootstrap” solar energy until renewable capacity catches up. With $16 billion spent on AI infrastructure in Q2 2026, SpaceX is betting big on energy independence to sustain its AI ambitions.
