A New Jersey federal judge has ordered Starbucks to pay an additional $2.7 million in damages to a former employee, Shannon Phillips. The employee had won a $25.6 million settlement in a wrongful termination case before against Starbucks. Phillips, a former regional director, alleged she was fired due to being white following a 2018 racial incident involving the arrest of two Black men at one of their stores.

The original settlement included punitive and compensatory damages. The judge’s recent ruling adds to the compensation, bringing the total amount to be paid by the company to $28.3 million. The company had argued against awarding economic damages due to a lack of evidence.
