MANCHESTER, Oct 22 — Manchester United have come under scrutiny following another disappointing Champions League result, with manager Michael Carrick and captain Bruno Fernandes questioning the team’s mentality and intensity.
Speaking after the defeat, Carrick apologised to supporters and admitted his players failed to meet the standards expected in a European fixture.
“It’s the motivation and the purpose and the intensity of a game of football that you have to bring. We didn’t bring that today,” he said. “I’ve got to apologise for the performance.”

The result leaves United with just three points from their opening three Champions League matches, placing added pressure on the team ahead of its next European outing.
Fernandes echoed his manager’s concerns, suggesting the side struggled mentally after conceding an early goal.
“Conceding early makes us go into the game with a mood of defeat,” the midfielder said, highlighting the team’s difficulty in recovering from setbacks during matches.
United’s sluggish response and lack of urgency were evident throughout the contest, raising further questions about the squad’s resilience and consistency on the continental stage.
The English club will have an opportunity to revive its campaign when it hosts AS Roma in its next Champions League fixture. A positive result will be crucial if United hope to strengthen their position in the group standings and keep their qualification hopes alive.
