DAP MP for Bagan Lim Guan Eng has called the locally developed Tuju navigation app a “national embarrassment” and demanded accountability for its rollout as a Waze replacement.
In a press statement today, Lim said whoever convinced Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that Tuju was technologically adequate should be punished.
Guan Eng: Punish Whoever Told Anwar Tuju Was Good Enough
He said user feedback shows relying on the app leaves people worse off, and he has received complaints about its ineffectiveness.
Lim said Malaysians back replacing Waze over security risks, since citizens’ movement data is subject to Israeli law, but not with an app he called defective at best and a failure at worst. Proper due diligence and stringent testing, he stressed, are needed so any replacement matches Waze’s basic navigation functions.
He also questioned the app’s development cost and whether its designers consulted experts in the US, Europe, China or Japan, saying the Prime Minister had been “wrongly advised.”
Lim urged Anwar to return to the drawing board and have the National Cyber Security Committee (NSC) build a vastly improved version. How, he asked, can the NSC ward off cyber threats and protect digital sovereignty when it cannot meet users’ navigation needs?
