1 min read

Malaysia continues to record thousands of drivers screened annually, with drink‑driving offences in thousand, notable numbers! However, fatal alcohol‑related crashes remain rare, accounting for less than 0.5% of road deaths in recent years. In 2023, 13 fatal cases were recorded, followed by 12 in 2024, and only two up to June 2025, representing 0.06% of 3,087 fatalities nationwide.

Despite more than 3,000 road deaths in the first half of 2025, drink driving remains among the least common contributors. Legal reforms in October 2020 under the Road Transport Act reduced the blood alcohol limit and introduced heavier penalties, including fines up to RM100,000, jail terms of 10–15 years, and licence disqualification for repeat offenders. Between 2021 and September 2024, 149 drink‑driving accident cases were charged in court, while 1,261 convictions for driving under the influence (alcohol and drugs) were recorded between January and November 2025. Drink‑driving offences in thousands.
