Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has pledged to connect approved data centres to Malaysia’s electricity grid within one year, as the country strengthens its power infrastructure to accommodate growing electricity demand. TNB chief distribution network officer Ahmad Sazree Abd Aziz said a reliable domestic transmission and distribution network was essential for supporting economic expansion and enabling Malaysia to benefit from the wider ASEAN Power Grid initiative. He made the remarks during Singapore International Energy Week 2026.

Faster Power Connections to Support Malaysia’s Growing Data Centre Industry

Ahmad Sazree said rising electricity consumption from homes, businesses and energy-intensive data centres requires careful forecasting, capacity planning and targeted infrastructure investment. Once a data centre receives approval from the relevant ministry-chaired committee, TNB aims to complete its grid connection within 12 months. The commitment is intended to help developers plan operations while ensuring electricity infrastructure keeps pace with new demand.

Grid Modernisation Key to Energy Security and Renewable Integration

TNB also plans to modernise and digitalise distribution networks to accommodate renewable energy connections. Ahmad Sazree stressed that regional electricity cooperation would deliver greater benefits when supported by strong domestic infrastructure. Coordinated planning across generation, transmission and distribution will be crucial to maintaining reliable supply as Malaysia attracts more digital infrastructure investment and expands renewable energy integration.

TNB says approved data centres will be connected to the national electricity grid within one year as power demand rises.
