KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5, 2026 – With BN-PN’s decisive win in Negeri Sembilan, analysts warn that Pakatan Harapan (PH) faces a do-or-die battle ahead of the next general election. Tajuddin Rasdi argue in FMT that PH must adopt “unthinkable” strategies to counter the conservative Malay-Muslim narrative and preserve Malaysia’s progressive future.
Six bold moves have been outlined: PH Survival
- New coalition – PH should form a loose alliance with progressive parties such as Muda, Bersama, Parti Sosialis Malaysia, and select independents. This would signal seriousness about inclusivity and progressive politics, leaving Umno tied to PAS and PN.
- Recognise UEC – PH must officially recognise the Unified Examination Certificate of Chinese-medium schools, as Sabah and Sarawak already do. Alongside this, racial quotas in universities could be adjusted to 45:55, demonstrating bold reform.
- Education subsidies – Subsidising 20% of private college fees for M40 and B40 families, plus a RM400 monthly allowance for B40 graduates seeking jobs, would directly support youth and families.
- Religious departments – Establishing federal and state-level departments for non-Islamic religions, funded by “sin taxes” on alcohol, gambling, and pig farming, would ensure fair treatment of all faiths.
- East Malaysia alliance – PH should forge a pact with dominant Sabah and Sarawak parties, offering uncontested paths to victory and settling oil revenue disputes, strengthening East Malaysia’s role.
- Sabah/Sarawak PM – The ultimate move: offering the prime ministership to a Sabahan or Sarawakian candidate if PH Plus wins. This would be unprecedented and could reshape Malaysia’s political balance.

He note BNPN would never match these proposals, given their reliance on Malay supremacy narratives. For PH, however, these “unthinkable” steps may be the only way to galvanize voters and prevent Malaysia from sliding into entrenched conservatism.
