PETALING JAYA, Aug 5, 2026 – Sarawak minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has disputed suggestions that Sabah and Sarawak will lose their kingmaker role in the next general election, despite predictions that Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) could secure a simple majority. Karim, who is also spokesman for Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), said the two states remain central to Malaysia’s political landscape due to their strategic weight and natural resources. “Do you think Peninsular parties dare risk not cooperating with Sarawak or Sabah?” he asked, as quoted by Dayak Daily.

His remarks followed claims by Larry Sng, president of Parti Bangsa Malaysia, who said BN and PN could form a majority based on recent Negeri Sembilan election results. Karim stressed GPS joined the unity government to ensure stability, noting that past elections showed no single coalition could govern without East Malaysian support.
