Malaysian woman caught in India trying to smuggle gibbons

1 min read

Customs officers at Chennai Airport seized four endangered Siamang gibbons and 52 green iguanas from a Malaysian passenger arriving from Kuala Lumpur on October 13. Acting on specific intelligence, the Air Intelligence Officers intercepted the female passenger, discovering the animals concealed in bags with air vents and carton boxes. Authorities arrested a driver who had arrived to collect the exotic pets, believed to be intended for India’s growing illegal exotic pet trade. The animals were stabilised and fed before being deported back to Malaysia. In a similar case in August, customs officials seized a gibbon monkey and other species from passengers arriving from Thailand.
