A representative from a hotpot restaurant told a local portal they have no ‘sitting fee’ but in actual fact, it is a ‘Sauce Charge policy’ that covers the cost of unlimited sauce refills and fruits provided to customers, not the costs associated with occupying a seat. The restaurant was responding to a social media post by a customer who said she felt that she was charged a such a fee.

‘Sitting fee’

Besides the service and sales tax (SST) and in some cases the service charge, we never heard of a fee for sitting down at any restaurants in Malaysia. Did you? But this was the question that the woman had asked on SocMed after she discovered that she was charged RM20 for a ‘sitting fee’ while dining at a hotpot restaurant located in Sungai Besi, KL. In this case, it appears it is a sauce charge fee instead. She should perhaps have asked the restaurant what the fee was about, right? Is it a bad idea to have a sitting fee?
