Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has agreed with suggestions that the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) establish a special body to investigate the management of Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) from 2017 to the present.
He said the inquiry is crucial to clarify events after 2017 based on facts and realities, helping to correct public perceptions about TH’s governance.
PAC Authority Seen as Stronger Than New RCI
The proposal was raised informally by several MPs during the “Reality and Perception: Don’t Politicize Tabung Haji” forum, which discussed governance issues highlighted in the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) report covering 2014–2020.
Zahid emphasized that PAC should examine the matter thoroughly, noting that the National Audit Department had issued clean audit certificates for TH under the Tabung Haji Act 1995.
He added that the PAC is better suited than a new RCI to conduct the investigation, given its clear mandate and locus standi. Zahid also clarified that resolutions from the forum need not be brought to Cabinet, as PAC itself should prioritize the matter.
By strengthening oversight, Zahid believes the investigation will dispel allegations of misconduct and restore confidence in TH’s management.
