Family medicine specialist Dr Mastura Mohd Sopian has emphasised the importance of hand hygiene and glove usage among food handlers. While it is commendable for food handlers to wear gloves, they must also be aware of what else they touch. Dr Mastura stated that money, in particular, can carry a high potential of pathogens that can cause health issues.
Food handlers not to use same gloves when handling physical cash
She advises food handlers to touch nothing but food when wearing gloves and to remove their gloves when performing other tasks such as accepting cash from customers. Clean nails are also vital in serving or handling food. In addition, Malaysian Public Health Physicians Association advisor Datuk Dr Zainal Ariffin Omar agreed that food handlers should not use the same gloved hands to handle money as it can increase the risk of pathogen transmission.
It is important for all food sellers in all areas, not just Ramadan bazaars, to embrace cashless transactions to avoid this risk of contamination. Councillor P. David Marshel has also urged bazaar organisers and public market administrators to encourage traders to fully adopt online transactions.
