Malaysia will conduct a detailed study on the total abolition of the death penalty beginning January 2026. Deputy Minister M. Kulasegaran said a Policy and Direction Review Working Group, in collaboration with the Malaysian Law Reform Committee, will lead the four-month review, which may be extended if necessary.
97 on Death Row as Abolition in Consideration
According to The Star, said study will involve government representatives, legal experts, NGOs, and families of victims and inmates, ensuring decisions are evidence-based. Currently, 97 individuals are on death row, including 38 awaiting appeal in the Court of Appeal, nine in the Federal Court, and 50 who have exhausted appeals but may seek pardons.
