Is Acquiring Aging Kuwaiti F/A-18 Hornets a Wise Move for Malaysia?

Malaysia has received approval from Kuwait to acquire secondhand F/A-18C/D Hornets for the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), serving as a temporary solution while waiting for the delayed Multirole Combat Aircraft (MRCA) programme. While adding to its fleet of Hornets may seem cost-effective, concerns arise over the maintenance challenges and aging technology of the Kuwaiti jets. The incompatibility of spare parts and differing system upgrades could complicate upkeep. Additionally, this move may aim to offset the ongoing issues with Malaysia’s Russian Sukhoi Su-30MKM jets, of which only four out of 18 are currently operational due to maintenance shortages.
