Aminuddin’s Gamble: Contesting UMNO Stronghold Linggi

1 min read

After more than a week of campaigning in the Negeri Sembilan state election, questions remain over caretaker Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun and his bold decision to contest in Linggi, a long‑standing UMNO stronghold.

The seat has been dominated by BN since 1969, tied closely to the legacy of Isa Samad and now held by Mohd Faizal Ramli. Ground sentiment suggests Aminuddin faces an uphill battle, with many Malay voters loyal to BN and younger voters following family traditions.

Aminuddin’s Bold Move to Contest Linggi Raises Questions

Compounding his challenge is the unresolved Adat Perpatih crisis, which locals quietly blame on Aminuddin. Chinese voters in Linggi also express frustration over unaddressed flooding issues, while fishermen complain about dilapidated jetties and rising fuel costs. Despite Aminuddin’s profile as Menteri Besar, Faizal’s reputation as a responsive incumbent remains strong.

The contest is further complicated by a three‑cornered fight involving Bersatu’s Zamri Md Sa, who could split Malay votes.

Analysts note Aminuddin’s only path to victory lies in consolidating Chinese and Indian support while capturing enough Malay votes to offset BN’s dominance. With less than a week left, Aminuddin’s campaign is widely seen as a “mission impossible” in Linggi.
