KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30, 2026 – In just 10 days, Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook has gone from being hailed as selfless to facing accusations of political theatrics after backtracking on his resignation offer.
On Sept 19, following a DAP leadership meeting, Loke announced he would resign to take responsibility for the party’s stance against former prime minister Najib Razak’s conditional house arrest. His move was initially praised as principled, though sceptics doubted he would follow through, especially after leaving for China on official duty.

By Sept 29, he clarified that his resignation would only take effect once Najib begins serving his sentence at home in Langgak Duta. Critics argue this exposes Loke’s reluctance to quit Cabinet, branding his earlier announcement as political drama.
Observers note that whether Najib remains in Kajang Prison or moves to house arrest, DAP failed to block the decision. His reversal has drawn comparisons to rivals he once derided as “power hungry.”
With Najib’s legal appeals ongoing and elections possibly due by 1H 2027, Loke may complete his ministerial tenure. Yet growing distrust among voters could see him and DAP relegated to the Opposition bench by GE16.
