Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has ordered immediate action against online shopping scams and fraud on e-commerce platforms, Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said. Fahmi told a press conference in Putrajaya after the Cabinet meeting on Friday (Oct 30) that the directive went to the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) and the Communications Ministry.
The Communications Ministry is to act particularly through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), according to the report by Malay Mail, which cited Bernama.
Online Shopping Scams Made a Priority
Fahmi said Anwar had raised several issues involving e-commerce, chief among them fraud and scams on shopping platforms. He also pointed to complaints about the high fees and commissions charged to sellers, and about customers receiving products that were different from what they had ordered.
“The prime minister has directed that this matter be prioritised and addressed urgently,” Fahmi said.
He said MCMC had met all the major e-commerce platforms several weeks ago. The platforms were not named in the report.
Enforcement Retreat Planned
Fahmi said a retreat involving enforcement agencies would be held in the coming weeks to coordinate an integrated response to the problems faced by e-commerce users.
He added that he would make several more announcements on the issue on Saturday (Oct 31) during the National Courier Day celebration.
