Anwar Says Nations Should Not Have to Choose Between Debt and Public Welfare

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for a fairer global financing system, saying developing countries should not be forced to choose between repaying their debts and fulfilling responsibilities to their citizens.

Speaking at the 18th BRICS Leaders Summit in New Delhi, Anwar said many developing economies are facing debt distress or serious risks, with some spending more on interest payments than on education and healthcare. 

Anwar Pushes Sustainable Financing for Developing Nations

Anwar said the international financial system must provide countries with greater room to pursue inclusive development while meeting debt obligations.

He argued that sustainable financing should become a key priority as economies face mounting financial pressures and development challenges. 

The Prime Minister also highlighted the importance of stronger BRICS cooperation, trade diversification and strategic autonomy in creating a more balanced global economic system.

He called for unfair trade practices to be addressed while encouraging greater collaboration in emerging areas. Anwar’s remarks reflect Malaysia’s push for financing arrangements that support economic growth while protecting social development and the wellbeing of ordinary citizens.
