Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim used his Malaysia Day speech in Kuching to praise leaders from Sabah and Sarawak while subtly taking aim at his deputy, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Speaking before federal and state leaders, Anwar highlighted the solidarity of Borneo politicians, contrasting it with occasional dissent within his cabinet.

Cameras captured Zahid’s stern expression as Anwar lauded the friendship and cooperation of East Malaysian leaders.

GPS and GRS Hold Key to Anwar’s Stability

The remarks come amid tensions within the unity government, with Zahid previously criticising Anwar’s economic policies and subsidy management. Despite Zahid’s push for early elections, Anwar’s majority remains secure with 150 MPs, even if Barisan Nasional’s 30 seats were withdrawn.

Crucially, Anwar’s long‑term stability depends on continued support from GPS, GRS, and other Borneo parties.

Anwar also praised Sarawak’s RM1.8 billion takeover of Bintulu Port as proof of sound governance.

He announced an increase in Sarawak’s interim special grant to RM1.5 billion, aligning with Sabah’s allocation, as part of efforts to honour the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). He stressed that MA63 must be treated as a national responsibility, not just an East Malaysian issue.

Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg thanked Anwar for his commitment, noting that cooperation between GPS and Putrajaya is driving Sarawak’s progress.
