Should Anwar Step Aside as PH Leader Before GE16?

1 min read

The question confronting Anwar Ibrahim is no longer simply how PH can avoid another electoral setback, but whether he should lead the coalition into GE16 at all. With PH facing growing pressure from both BN and PN, some within the coalition believe a leadership reset may be necessary.

Former DAP deputy minister Ong Kian Ming has gone further, suggesting Anwar openly declare that he will not lead PH into the next election, allowing the coalition to rebuild around new leadership.

Anwar Step Aside

The more immediate problem, however, is PKR’s own leadership vacuum. If Anwar steps aside, who has the credibility and political strength to unite PH and negotiate its future?

Exploratory talks with Bersatu suggest PH recognises it cannot fight BN and PN alone. But Bersatu’s role in the 2020 political collapse remains a major obstacle.

Anwar’s dilemma is therefore stark: remain and risk carrying PH towards another defeat, or step aside and create space for renewal.
