Martin Odegaard scored the only goal as Arsenal edged Hull City 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday (Nov 7) to move six points clear at the top of the Premier League, ESPN reported.

The Arsenal captain struck in the 72nd minute, following up after Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis could only push out a shot from Noni Madueke.

Hull had the first effort on target of the match in the first half, when Elliot Stroud forced Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya into a save, according to VAVEL and Sky Sports.

VAR denies Arsenal a penalty

The home side were left frustrated shortly before half-time after a penalty check on a shirt pull by Hull’s Nobel Mendy on Kai Havertz.

ESPN reported that referee Farai Hallam went to the pitchside monitor and confirmed the foul, but then ruled Havertz offside and gave Hull a free kick instead. VAVEL also reported that the offside call cancelled out the foul, so no penalty was awarded.

ESPN’s report argued that the foul should have taken priority, since the contact came well away from the ball. Sky Sports reported that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said he was confused by the decision and that there was no clarity on it yet.

Late in the game, Madueke was denied as he tried to go round the goalkeeper, and Hull cleared a deflected effort off the line, Sky Sports reported.

Arsenal six points clear at the top

The win took Arsenal to 27 points from 10 matches, with nine wins and one defeat, according to the ESPN standings. Manchester City are second on 21 points from nine games after their 3-1 loss at Nottingham Forest on the same day.

Sky Sports noted that Arsenal have now won each of their last 10 home games in all competitions and have kept seven clean sheets in 10 Premier League matches.

It was also Arsenal’s 34th 1-0 Premier League win under Arteta, the most by any side since his first game in charge in December 2019, Sky Sports said.

Hull boss Sergej Jakirovic praised his players for their bravery, particularly in defence, Sky Sports reported.

ESPN’s preview noted that Arsenal were aiming to head into the international break ahead of City. Hull had gone five games without a win before the trip to London, after beating Manchester United on the opening day of the season, ESPN said.
