A tragic accident in Baling claimed the life of a five-month-old baby boy while leaving his parents injured after their car collided with a lorry driven by a man who tested positive for drugs. The incident occurred at 10.30pm near the Kampung Sadek junction along Jalan Baru Kulim/Baling/Gerik.
District police chief Superintendent Brandon Richard Joe said the family, travelling in a Perodua Myvi from Kelantan towards Kupang, was struck by a lorry driven by a 43-year-old local man heading in the same direction towards Penang.
Baby Dies
The collision left the baby critically injured; he was pronounced dead at Hospital Baling before being transferred to the Forensic Department at Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah in Alor Setar for post-mortem.
The 27-year-old driver and his 41-year-old wife sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at Hospital Baling. Police confirmed the lorry driver tested positive for drugs during initial screening and has been remanded for four days to assist investigations.
The case is being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a penalty of 10 to 15 years’ imprisonment and fines between RM50,000 and RM100,000 for causing death while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
