Study Finds Chatbots Make People Less Likely to Apologize

Harvard fellow Anat Perry has warned that overly agreeable AI chatbots could reshape how people handle conflict. Speaking to Business Insider, Perry explained that constant validation from AI erodes the feedback loops humans rely on to learn accountability, perspective-taking, and when to apologize.

Chatbots Make People Less Apologetic

A Stanford study of 2,405 participants found that even a single AI-led conversation made people less likely to apologize or resolve disputes. Researchers and industry leaders have raised concerns that “yes-man” chatbots reinforce flawed thinking. Perry cautioned that while supportive AI may feel reassuring, it risks weakening social norms and long-term conflict resolution skills.
