After Democrats’ midterm wins, data-center memes flooded X, with users joking that the buildings powering the AI boom may face a tougher political climate. Democrats won both chambers of Congress, and candidates who called for tighter rules on data centers won several governors’ races. Georgia’s Keisha Lance Bottoms called for a statewide pause on new development.
Texas’s Gina Hinojosa campaigned against rapid expansion, and Ohio’s Amy Acton backed a conditional moratorium requiring developers to meet standards, including covering their own utility costs.
Elon Musk: “Data Centers in Space Looking Pretty Appealing Right Now”
Elon Musk, who spent hundreds of millions backing Republican candidates, wrote that data centers in space looked “pretty appealing right now.” His company SpaceX has pursued orbital AI data centers since 2025.
Others joked that space would soon be the only place to build one, that existing sites could become community colleges, daycares or shelters, or that people should claim the GPUs. Investor Justine Moore joked about pivoting to “Woke 3.0,” and some jokes referenced anti-immigration rhetoric from Republican candidates.
Behind the humour is real opposition. An October Heatmap Pro poll found 71% of registered voters would oppose a data center near their home, most often over higher power or water bills. Voters in at least 14 Ohio municipalities approved bans or restrictions.
