Two elderly residents of Chatham County, Georgia, have lost more than US$100,000 combined after a pop-up warning told them their computers were infected with a virus, according to the Chatham County Police Department.
One victim reportedly sent more than $80,000, and the other more than $28,000.
Fake virus
A police spokesperson urged residents never to click pop-up links or unexpected texts and emails, and never to send money because someone claims your data has been compromised.
If a warning like this appears on your screen, the safest move is to close the browser or turn the device off and talk to a trusted family member or your bank before doing anything else. Genuine tech companies do not ask for payment through pop-up alerts.
