An elderly woman in England has lost more than £20,000 after fraudsters pretended to be Gloucestershire police officers, according to local police.
Police say the criminals used spoofed phone numbers that, when searched online, appeared to belong to either Hester’s Way Police Station in Cheltenham or Bearlands Police Station in Gloucester. The force had already issued a warning after police forces elsewhere in the country reported similar calls claiming to come from Gloucestershire officers.

Police say fraudsters can be highly manipulative and often tell victims not to speak to friends or family, claiming they are helping with an investigation.
What police advise
- If you are unsure whether a caller is a real officer, stop and call 101 to check.
- If you only have one phone line, wait at least 10 minutes and call a friend or family member first, to make sure the scammer is no longer connected.
- Knowing your name, address or date of birth does not prove someone is a genuine police employee.
Police are asking people to warn elderly or vulnerable relatives and friends about the scam.
