Fenced‑off sidewalks have unfortunately become a familiar sight in Malaysia, particularly across Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. For pedestrians, this often means long stretches with no openings, making it difficult to cross roads safely.
To make matters worse, designated crosswalks are sometimes absent altogether, leaving people with few options but to navigate busy traffic on their own.
Fenced Off Sidewalks Causing Stir on Social Media
An X user voiced out his frustration towards the situation asking if Pedestrians are akin to zoo animals. People aren’t able to walk freely as these barriers would limit them from entering these sidewalks.
Oddly enough, fenced‑off sidewalks are still seen as a plus in Malaysia, since many areas don’t even have proper walkways. In such places, pedestrians are often forced to walk directly on muddy ground or along the tar road itself, sharing space with vehicles.
Some users argue that municipalities in certain districts install these fences to prevent motorcyclists from riding or parking on sidewalks. They add that the measure also helps deter street stalls from being set up in these areas, keeping walkways clear for pedestrians.
Regardless, there needs to be more civic sense when it comes to public spaces. There are so few that are well maintained, or that are even available. These pathways are important as some may completely rely on them to get from one place to another.
