PARIS, Oct 6, 2026 – France is preparing for major protests on Tuesday after organisers called for a nationwide mobilisation in support of students demanding greater investment in education. The Union Syndicale Lycéenne (USL) urged participation, citing “unprecedented repression” and a lack of concrete government action.
The demonstrations, which began in September, have spread across the country, with students blockading schools and clashing with police. Officials reported at least 190 injuries and more than 5,000 arrests. On Monday, a 15‑year‑old boy in Lens lost his hand during a confrontation near a school, while another student was struck by a tear gas grenade last week.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced measures to improve conditions in schools but warned: “We will make no concessions to violence.” Education Minister Édouard Geffray said 24 schools had been “burned and ransacked” since the protests began.
Radical‑left leader Jean‑Luc Mélenchon described the movement as the strongest youth mobilisation since 1968.
