Haze conditions deteriorated across Malaysia on October 18, with 26 areas recording unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings of above 100. Pasir Gudang in Johor recorded the country’s highest reading at 182, raising concerns about the impact of worsening air quality on public health.
According to the Department of Environment’s Air Pollutant Index Management System, several locations in Johor, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and the Federal Territories were also affected.
Haze Worsens
In Johor, Kota Tinggi recorded an API of 179, followed by Larkin at 170 and Pengerang at 168. In Selangor, Johan Setia registered 161, while Shah Alam recorded 157.
Negeri Sembilan also experienced poor air quality, with Nilai reaching 170 and Seremban recording 166. Several locations in Melaka and Kuala Lumpur likewise registered unhealthy readings.
The Department of Environment classifies API readings between 101 and 200 as unhealthy, while readings from 201 to 300 are considered very unhealthy.
A further 41 locations nationwide recorded moderate air quality, while only one area registered a good reading. Residents in affected areas should monitor official air-quality updates and take precautions, particularly children, older people and those with respiratory conditions.
