A Hong Kong man arrested at Hong Kong International Airport with about 1kg of cocaine hidden in his shoes is believed to be linked to a drug syndicate recently busted by Malaysian police, Bukit Aman said on Saturday (Nov 7).
Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the 36-year-old was caught during a customs check after arriving from Malaysia last Wednesday, according to Bernama. The cocaine was worth HK$600,000 (about RM311,000).
Same modus operandi and destinations
Hussein said police believe the man is tied to the same network because the modus operandi, type of drug and destinations involved were almost identical. The syndicate’s targets included Hong Kong, Japan and Indonesia.
“We believe the syndicate has been crippled,” he was quoted as saying.
Brickfields homestay raid – cocaine arrest
On Thursday (Nov 5), police arrested four people, including a Hong Kong national believed to be the mastermind, at a homestay in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. They seized 450g of cocaine and two pairs of shoes that were meant for two drug mules recruited by the group.
According to Bernama, the syndicate has been active since September. Five Malaysians were arrested at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta airport and another five at Tokyo’s Haneda airport in September and October.
