IAPWA Neutered 8,700 Dogs but Constant New Strays Recurring Problem

1 min read

The International Aid for the Protection & Welfare of Animals (IAPWA) Penang recently posted on Facebook that they have neutered over 8,700 dogs. But their post mentions that new strays keep coming as people release them to the public despite it being illegal.

The welfare organisation noted that when approaching unregistered dogs, they sometimes encounter hostility from individuals claiming to be the animals’ owners.

One person even insisted that their puppies should be allowed to “roam free like birds.” When informed that such actions were illegal, the individual dismissively replied, “What can you do to me?”

The organisation urged the government to step in and have better control of the situation similarly to the likes of Singapore and other developed nations.

Social media users agree with the organisation’s sentiments towards the matter. Loving a dog does not end at simply feeding them and shoving them off right after. The safety of individuals and dogs are at risk if the owners or caretakers themselves are irresponsible.

Another user shared a heartfelt comment, noting that stray dogs are not “just strays” — many were once someone’s pets before abandonment forced them onto the streets.

Others mentioned that cats can be an issue as well, and that their owners or caretakers should also be responsible when taking care of them.
