KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 — The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) has expressed regret over a misleading statement made by one of its academics, clarifying that the view did not represent the university’s stance. The statement followed controversy involving Arabic language lecturer Solehah Yaacob, who claimed the Romans learned shipbuilding from the Malays.

IIUM said while it values academic freedom, public statements must be responsible and factually accurate. The university is reviewing the remarks internally and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining scholarly integrity. Solehah was previously cautioned after making another controversial historical claim last year.
