PETALING JAYA, July 28, 2026 – Former Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming has outlined two possible paths for DAP should its support continue to decline in the upcoming 16th General Election (GE16). Speaking to Utusan Malaysia, Ong said the party’s immediate priority should be to retain as much non-Malay support as possible, while efforts to expand Malay backing may be less urgent.

He suggested DAP could either double down on its traditional Chinese voter base, holding strong in Penang and Selangor while accepting an opposition role federally, or embark on a renewal strategy to shed its image as a “Chinese party.” Ong stressed the need for improved messaging to Malays, rebuilding policy credibility, and empowering younger leaders. DAP will hold a special congress on Aug 16 to decide its role in government, amid recent electoral setbacks in Sabah and Johor.
