Putrajaya in Sight: PAS Deploys Moderate PM Candidate to Win Over Chinese Community
PAS is reportedly intensifying efforts to court the Malaysian Chinese community as part of its long-term strategy to capture federal power. Central to this “charm offensive” is the promotion of Terengganu Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, as the party’s moderate prime ministerial candidate. Described as well-educated with an international perspective, Samsuri is being positioned to bridge the gap between Islamic fundamentalism and the concerns of non-Muslims.

The party is prepared to engage with the “four pillars” of the Chinese community: associations, businesses, education, and media. By presenting a leader whose daughter studies in Beijing and who speaks fluent English, PAS aims to soften its image. However, analysts note that the party must still clarify how its conservative policies—such as entertainment restrictions—would affect the lifestyle of the Chinese community at a federal level. This calculated move suggests PAS is prioritizing broad public acceptance to secure a simple majority in the next election.
