KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 — The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) is piloting a study on multi-level graves to tackle space shortages in Kuala Lumpur’s full or nearly full cemeteries, such as Sungai Penchala, Kampung Puah, and Raudhatul Sakinah. Launched in February with Universiti Sains Malaysia, the study, set to conclude by October, examines public acceptance and models from other states, like Penang’s Al-Jamiul Badawi Mosque. Jawi director-general Hanifuddin Roslan said options include two-tier burials or elevated grounds via landfilling. A new cemetery in Hulu Semenyih, announced on May 26, will serve Muslims for 28 years.
