The Malaysian Immigration Department (JIM) has temporarily halted the issuance of Malaysian International Passports (PMA) with validity periods exceeding 10 years after several holders faced check‑in problems with foreign airlines.
The confusion reportedly stemmed from differing interpretations of the six‑month validity rule applied by some carriers.

In a statement, JIM confirmed that the maximum validity for PMAs will now be capped at 10 years to standardise international travel requirements.
Existing passport holders with validity periods longer than 10 years will be offered free replacements, prioritised processing, and official letters to assist with overseas travel.
The department said the suspension will remain in effect until discussions with airlines and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) resolve the issue. JIM emphasised that the move aims to prevent further confusion and ensure smoother travel experiences for Malaysians abroad.
Since the introduction of the extended‑validity option, the initiative was intended to reduce frequent renewals for frequent travellers.
However, the recent complications prompted JIM to act swiftly. The department reaffirmed its commitment to improving passport services and maintaining Malaysia’s compliance with international aviation standards.
