A 16-month-old baby girl died after she was believed to have suffered abuse while under the care of her step-grandmother in Taman Sri Saujana, Kota Tinggi. Police said the child’s mother had entrusted her care to the woman because she was studying at a vocational college. The step-grandmother reported that the baby was unresponsive when she tried to wake her on July 31.

A post-mortem found trauma to the abdomen and chest caused by a blunt object, along with wounds and bruises believed to be linked to abuse. Police initially investigated the case under the Child Act before reclassifying it under Section 302 of the Penal Code. The step-grandmother, the baby’s grandfather and the mother were detained.
The step-grandmother is expected to be charged at the Kota Tinggi Magistrates’ Court, while the other two were released on police bond as potential prosecution witnesses. Police said no weapon has been recovered. The case has intensified concerns over child protection and the safety of children placed under alternative caregivers.
