German airline Lufthansa announced Tuesday it will cancel 20,000 short‑haul flights through October, citing soaring jet fuel costs that have doubled since the conflict in Iran. The move, which includes retiring its 27‑plane CityLine fleet, is expected to save more than 40,000 metric tons of fuel.

The first 120 flights were canceled this week, affecting hubs in Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Brussels, and Rome. Lufthansa emphasized that long‑haul connections remain intact, with schedules optimized from June onward.
Other European carriers, including SAS and Air France‑KLM, have adopted similar measures to manage rising fuel expenses. The cancellations highlight the growing pressure on airlines to balance efficiency, costs, and passenger access amid volatile energy markets.
