New Split in grand coalition: MIC, MIPP rebuke Sanusi for Tanah Melayu remark

1 min read

PETALING JAYA, July 25, 2026 – Perikatan Nasional (PN) election director Sanusi Nor has drawn sharp criticism from the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) and the Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP) over remarks suggesting that non-Malay ethnic groups in Malaysia could fall back on ancestral homelands outside the country. MIC president SA Vigneswaran urged Barisan Nasional (BN) to reconsider its alliance with PN, warning that repeated racial and religious statements from PAS leaders risk alienating multiracial voters. He stressed that Malaysian Chinese and Indians are loyal citizens, not foreigners, and called for moderation in political discourse.

MIPP president P Punithan rejected the notion that Malaysian Indians view India as their homeland, declaring Malaysia his only home. “Malaysia is not merely the place where I live, but the homeland that I love with all my heart,” he said. Sanusi, also Kedah menteri besar, had claimed “Tanah Melayu” was the sole homeland for Malays.
