PETALING JAYA, July 25, 2026 – Political analysts say DAP’s suggestion for its leaders to resign from Cabinet is aimed at restoring voter confidence after the party’s defeat in the Sabah state election, rather than destabilizing the unity government. Syaza Shukri of the International Islamic University Malaysia explained that even if DAP ministers step down, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim retains majority support in Parliament, ensuring government stability. “It is more symbolic, showing DAP listens to the people and wants to regain support,” she said as reported by FMT.

DAP Secretary-General Loke Siew Fook earlier announced a party congress on August 16 to decide on the proposal, stressing continued support for Anwar. Meanwhile, Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia said the move reflects moral responsibility after DAP’s poor showing in Sabah, adding it could enhance public perception of integrity. He noted Anwar could simply appoint replacements from coalition partners.
