A tech expert on Twitter recently mentioned that if businesses are calculative over the 1.8% government charges to use cashless payments, it’s easier if they’d just close shop. This statement was sparked due to a netizen posting a petrol station convenience store demanding their customers to pay in cash only for purchases made below RM20.
Bank Negara Malaysia replied to the tweet mentioning if this happens, a formal complaint should be made to them. It is the store’s responsibility to pay the extra charges when purchases are made using cashless payments and not the consumer’s prerogative.
Some netizens say that 1.8% is a lot for some businesses. However others replied that if you can’t make a profit on a product that cost RM10, you’re better off selling kuih by the roadside. Netizens agree that using cashless payment with no minimum spending is their consumer right, and if a store declines to do so, purchase your item elsewhere.
