It seems New York City’s Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has struck a chord with Malaysians on social media. Yet, many left‑leaning or more liberal Malaysians acknowledge that leaders like him would struggle to gain the chance to lead in Malaysia’s political landscape.
Zohran Mamdani Policies too Liberal for Malaysian Politics
While many acknowledge the general positivity that has been done by the NYC mayor, the policies that he supports would most likely be incompatible to the very people who claim they support him here according to social media users.
X user @binigetou says that Malaysians are too conservative to support a politician like Mamdani. Additionally, the NYC mayor is a “Syiah” which is a different deviation of most Muslims in Malaysia.
Following that, Threads user @_nsyakinah says that free-haired Muslim women are still being criticised publicly for not wearing the hijab in Malaysia, yet some of these users feel he and his liberal policies would be perfect for them.
Others say that even the current Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim has been called a liberal person multiple times despite being more conservative than the NYC mayor.
Furthermore, Threads user @4li4fnd mentioned that just a few weeks prior, many were calling for the Rohingya refugees to be expelled from Malaysia. This stance stands in direct contradiction to Zohran Mamdani, who openly advocates for immigration and refugee rights in the United States.
