KUALA LUMPUR – A 64-year-old man, Mat Derus Ali, has been sentenced to four months in jail by the Sessions Court after pleading guilty to uploading offensive content on Facebook that insulted Malaysia’s royal institution. The post, detected by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in Cyberjaya, was deemed to contain racial and religious provocation under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman stressed that issues involving race, religion, and royalty (3R) are highly sensitive and must not be trivialised. In a separate case, retired soldier Marzuki Ismail, 52, pleaded not guilty to a similar charge over a Facebook post in December 2025 and was released on RM7,000 bail. Public opinion remains divided, with some defending the court’s decision while others mock the punishment on social media. Full reports can be viewed on Facebook and TikTok.
