PETALING JAYA, Aug 19, 2026 – Miri MP Chiew Choon Man has criticised controversial preacher Ridhuan Tee Abdullah for making what he described as “inflammatory” remarks about a proposed Chinese university campus in Sarawak.
Chiew accused Ridhuan of stoking racial tension by claiming that Chinese leaders in Sarawak were pushing for a “Chinese university” in East Malaysia, which he suggested could undermine national unity. “What exactly is his problem?” Chiew asked, dismissing the preacher’s comments as baseless.

Ridhuan had also alleged that Chinese leaders were not satisfied with efforts to secure recognition for the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) or with establishing the New Era University College, and were now pushing for a foreign university.
Chiew countered that the origin of a university does not determine the ethnicity of its students. “Universities from Australia, Japan or the UK are not restricted to people of those nationalities. Diversity is not a barrier to unity,” he said.
The deputy tourism, arts and culture minister stressed that unity is undermined only when diversity is portrayed as a threat. He warned that inflammatory statements risk deepening divisions between communities, urging leaders to avoid exploiting racial and religious fears for political gain.
